about

JP Hartnett’s ‘Whittle’ is the first release on new label Idir.

It represents a departure from previous releases by the artist, simply comprising, as it does, a set of fully improvised piano recordings, with no overdubbing, effects, editing or additional production. The aim was to let spontaneity and constraints shape the direction of the music. The session recordings were gradually discarded until the sequence of tracks presented here remained. The album opens with the slowly evolving ‘Biographical reminiscence, part the first’, shifting in pace, mood and duration over its eight tracks until closing with the melancholy stillness of ‘Conclusion of foregoing’.

JP Hartnett creates music on piano, often using a combination of improvisation, composition and digital production techniques. Inspired by the DIY music scenes of his youth in Dublin and (later) London, he owes his entire musical output to a chance encounter with a piano while studying design in his late-twenties. An early track was featured on FatCat Records’ Soundcloud demo page and led to releases on various independent labels. He has also been involved in a number of collaborative projects, including the experimental live techno act Ordinate, with John Flynn (Spaces). He has performed at the Barbican and St. John on Bethnal Green in London, and at the Open Ear festival on Sherkin Island, off the coast of Cork.
